Putting Japan Back On Par

NSSK tees off on Japan’s golf tour, betting private capital can drive a PGA-style commercial revival.

A back-nine buyout is under way in Japan, as investment firm NSSK takes control of the country’s professional men’s golf tour in an attempt to put the game on a stronger financial footing. The firm plans to inject capital and expertise into the Japan Golf Tour Organisation, whose revenues and profile have lagged behind the more commercially successful US PGA Tour. NSSK hopes to attract more sponsors, raise prize money and improve the tour’s media and digital presence, taking inspiration from the PGA’s more sophisticated commercial model. The deal is another example of private capital moving into sport, where fragmented rights, loyal audiences and untapped commercial opportunities can offer an appealing investment proposition. For Japanese golf, however, the challenge will be turning the takeover into a genuine revival rather than simply changing who holds the club. With NSSK now stepping onto the back nine, the real test is whether it can finish the round under par.
